Chronic Pain
Physical Therapy addresses the musculoskeletal
aspects of chronic pain problems. The therapists at Carrola Physical
Therapy, Inc are experts in musculoskeletal function and dysfunction,
and use many tools and techniques to help alleviate pain. And help
you to make changes to remove the source of your pain. Physical Therapy
Treatment can be helpful for any problem that causes pain or difficulty
doing the things you need to do.
Chronic Pain Can Steal Sleep, Work
and Pleasure. Whenever you may have stubbed a toe, pulled a muscle,
sprained an ankle or smacked your head, you’ve felt pain –
sometimes for days. And as bad as pain feels, it’s in fact
good for you. Acute pain is the body’s way to tell you to
stop what you are doing and protect yourself. Eventually the injured
tissue heals and the acute pain goes away.
But imagine if the pain didn’t go away. Chronic pain –
defined as persistent pain lasting longer than six months –
affects millions of people. It can result from so many things: injuries
that never fully healed; failed surgeries; lower back problems;
arthritis; fibromyalgia; and a variety of diseases. Chronic pain
makes it difficult or impossible for a person to carry out a job
or perform ordinary activities. It can cause loss of appetite, interfere
with sleep, lead to deconditioning, frustration, and tends to take
the joy out of life.

There are countless origins of chronic pain, but once pain becomes
chronic, the patient's diagnosis may no longer be the originating
illness or injury. It often simply becomes "chronic pain",
but there is nothing simple about it. Pinpointing the exact location
and reason for the pain, let alone a cure, can become elusive.
Physical Therapists have extensive education in anatomy and body
mechanics. They are experts in musculoskeletal function and dysfunction,
and they use many tools and techniques to help alleviate pain. These
include massage and therapeutic exercises for the muscles, joints
and bones, heat, cold and electrical stimulation.
As people start to feel better and sleep better, their outlook and
stamina improve, they are able to accomplish daily activities, and
they may be able to reduce their use of medication. Helping patients
find ways to manage their own pain is an important component of
physical therapy treatment.
